Renewing or Replacing Your Lithuanian ID Card: Timelines and Costs

A Lithuanian identity card (asmens tapatybės kortelė) is issued to Lithuanian citizens. If you are a citizen renewing or replacing your card, the process is handled by the Migration Department and is refreshingly predictable once you know the steps. (If you are a foreign national living here, you hold a residence permit rather than an ID card — a different procedure we can also help with.)

When you need to renew or replace

You apply for a new card when the current one has expired, is lost or damaged, or when your personal details have changed. When collecting a card that reflects changed details, you submit the old card as part of the process.

How to apply

Applications and appointments are managed through the Migration Department’s MIGRIS / e-MIGRIS portal. You book an appointment online, then attend in person to submit the required documents and provide your biometric data (photo and signature/fingerprints). The old document is surrendered when the new one is issued.

Fees and speed options

The state fee depends on how quickly you need the card:

  • Standard – issued within about 1 month (lowest fee)
  • Expedited – around 5 working days
  • Urgent – as fast as 1 working day (highest fee)

In 2026 the fee ranges roughly from €10 to €100 depending on the deadline chosen, and a 50% discount typically applies to minors and pension-age applicants. Always check the current published fee before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

Can a non-citizen get a Lithuanian ID card? No — the ID card is for citizens only. Legal residents receive a residence permit instead.

Can I apply from abroad? Citizens abroad can generally apply through a consulate; the document and biometric requirements still apply.

Important: Tikra Licencija is an independent consultancy, not a government authority. We help eligible applicants navigate official procedures — we do not issue documents, and we cannot obtain a licence or ID for anyone who is not legally eligible. Driving and boat licences require passing the official Regitra examinations in person; Lithuanian ID cards are issued only to Lithuanian citizens. Always confirm current rules and fees with the relevant authority.

Not sure where you stand? Request a free eligibility check and we will map the lawful route for your exact situation — or tell you honestly if there isn’t one.
